Nadat Will (Miles Teller) en Jillian (Anna Kendrick) hun opleiding aan de universiteit hebben voltooid komen ze maar moeilijk aan de bak, ondanks dat ze hoog gekwalificeerd zijn. Terwijl hun financiële situatie steeds benauwder begint te worden, wordt Will gedwongen werk aan te nemen dat ver beneden zijn kwalificaties ligt. Ondertussen blijft Jillian werkzoekende, echter langzaam maar zeker begint zij de vrije ‘levensstijl’ die bij werkloosheid mogelijk is, steeds meer te waarderen.
