De moeder van Holly Gooding werd vermoord. Holly vlucht naar Los Angeles waar ze kamergenote wordt van de beginnende schrijver Patrick Highsmith. Op een dag vertelt Patrick haar dat hij haar op straat zag, terwijl Holly zeker weet dat ze in bed lag. Dit maakt haar angst voor haar dubbelgangster weer zeer sterk. Het is duidelijk dat deze dubbelgangster haar naar Los Angeles is gevolgd. Wat later verneemt de jonge schrijver van een FBI-agent dat Holly van de moord op haar moeder wordt verdacht.
