James Leeds komt te werken als spraakleraar op een dovenschool waar hij ex-pupil Sarah uit haar isolement probeert te halen. Sarah wil eerst niks van James weten en wil alleen met gebaren communiceren. Langzamerhand kan James toch tot haar doordringen.
