John Hall accepteerd een baan accepteert in de oude textielfabriek van Gates Falls. Hij kan niet met de overheersende opzichter overweg. De relatie met Jane Wisconsky word door de jaloerse baas dan ook bestraft. John moet werken in de kelders van de fabriek. Alles lijkt tegen John, en over zijn op vreemde wijze overleden voorganger doen de raarste verhalen de ronde. Er worden zelfs weddenschappen afgesloten over de tijd dat John het tussen de ratten zal vol houden. De kelder is echter een onmetelijke diepte waarin een onbekend en niet menselijk groot gevaar schuilt...
