Het is mei 1992 als de italiaanse maffiajager Giovanni Falcone samen met zijn vrouw en vijf lijfwachten op de snelweg naar Palermo om het leven komen bij een gruwelijke bomaanslag. Falcone is dan al meer dan tien jaar aan het werk om de Cosa Nostra te ontmantelen. Hij heeft uiterst nauwkeurig het net rond de grootste maffiabazen gesloten en staat op het punt om tal van corrupte politici te ontmaskeren. Maffiatopman Totò Riina beslist anders...
