Alan, een verlegen jongen uit New York, brengt de zomer door met zijn vrienden in de wildernis. De tocht lijkt niet alleen een overlevingstocht te worden, maar ook een strijd met zijn begeleider Vic die erop gebrand is om een echte man van Alan te maken. Alan schrijft zich liever in voor een computerkamp, maar zijn ouders dwingen hem om mee te doen aan de survivaltocht. Hoewel hij niet de fysieke kwaliteiten bezit die de overige jongens wel hebben, weet Alan zich toch te redden door slim te zijn. Hij weet pas waartoe hij in staat is wanneer de groep jongens het op eigen houtje moet zien te redden.
