Lawrence is een verwende rijkeluiszoon met een gokschuld van 28.000 dollar. Als zijn vader hem hiermee weigert te helpen, ontvlucht hij zijn schuldeisers door met het Vredeskorps naar Zuidoost-Azië te gaan, waar hij samen met de praatzieke Tom Tuttle en de mooie Beth Wrexler de opdracht krijgt een brug te bouwen voor de plaatselijke bevolking.
