Een onorthodoxe professor maakt gebruik van controversiële methoden, waarbij hij zijn studenten laat deelnemen aan een gevaarlijk experiment om een poltergeist te creëren. Op basis van de theorie dat paranormale activiteit wordt veroorzaakt door negatieve menselijke energie, voert hij een reeks aan testen uit op een jonge patiënt. Wanneer beangstigende gebeurtenissen zich beginnen af te spelen, realiseert de groep zich al snel dat ze een angstaanjagende kracht hebben geactiveerd
