Het is 1943. Eugene Morris Jerome moet voor het eerst in zijn leven de voor hem vertrouwde omgeving van Brooklyn verlaten als hij naar een opleidingskamp voor mariniers in het diepe zuiden van Biloxi te Mississippi gaat. Met de verwachting donuts en vertier te vinden, wordt de jonge schrijver echter geconfronteerd met het feit dat de opleiding voor een oorlogsleger een strijd is om te overleven. Samen met een peloton van slungelige, blunderende jonge rekruten leert Eugene discipline op de harde manier van de meestal onvoorspelbare sergeantinstructeur Merwin J. Toomey. Hij moet de groentjes zo snel mogelijk klaarstomen tot keiharde vechtende mannen.
