Een van Sicilië afkomstige familie besluit zich in Amerika te vestigen in de hoop op een beter bestaan. De 'nieuwe' wereld blijkt echter minder toegankelijk en rooskleurig dan hen is voorgedaan. Vooral de verschillen tussen de culturen zijn enorm en de familie komt in aanraking met mensen die zij thuis nooit hadden willen ontmoeten.
