De Fowlers zijn een normale familie uit Maine. Matt is de dorpsdokter, zijn vrouw Ruth is de leider van het schoolkoor, en hun zoon Frank is thuis na zijn eerste jaar als student. Frank is verliefd op Natalie, een jonge moeder die nog niet helemaal gescheiden is van haar echtgenoot, Richard Strout. Richard vindt het verschrikkelijk om zijn vrouw op stap te zien met andere mannen, en er dreigt een grote tragedie voor de Fowlers.
