Als Alex in 2004 een huis aan een meer koopt, vindt hij brieven in de brievenbus van de vorige eigenaresse, Kate Forster. Hij wil de brieven bij haar huidige adres afleveren, maar komt er dan achter dat het adres niet meer bestaat. Kate en Alex beginnen elkaar te schrijven en ontdekken tot hun grote schrik dat Alex in 2004 leeft en Kate in 2006. Ze proberen een manier te vinden om elkaar te ontmoeten, want de twee worden hopeloos verliefd op elkaar.
