In het Chicago van 2035 behoren robots tot het alledaagse leven. Ze staan ten dienste van de mensen en worden door hen blindelings vertrouwd, omdat ze geprogrammeerd zijn volgens de drie wetten van de robotica. Deze bepalen dat de technologische hoogstandjes de mensen geen kwaad kunnen doen. Rechercheur Del Spooner houdt er echter een andere mening op na. Hij moet de moord op de briljante wetenschapper Alfred Lanning ophelderen en hij vermoedt dat de dader een robot is.
