Dit is het verhaal van een jong, zelfstandig meisje genaamd Ai, dat op een dag naar het Dierendorp verhuist. Terwijl ze in Tom Nooks winkel 'Nook's Cranny' werkt, begint ze haar leven weg van haar familie te leiden. Om te beginnen kent ze links niet van rechts, maar onder leiding van burgemeester Tortimer, de boze maar correcte meneer Resetti, en de rondzwervende muzikant K.K. Onder meer Slider wordt ze uiteindelijk geaccepteerd als lid van het dorp. Op een avond, terwijl ze langs het strand loopt, vindt ze een bericht in de fles. Het zet haar op een zoektocht om pijnbomen rond het dorp te planten om een wonder te vervullen aan de vooravond van het Winterfestival.
