Tasmanië, 1954. De Sloveense migrante Melita verlaat haar echtgenoot en haar jonge dochter, Sonja. Sonja's verontruste vader volhardt echter in zijn nieuwe leven in een nieuw land, maar al spoedig belandt hij in een wanhopige alcoholverslaving en bij de eerste gelegenheid die Sonja krijgt, verlaat ook zij hem. Bijna 20 jaar later, alleen en zwanger, keert zij terug naar de hooglanden van Tasmanië en naar haar vader, in een poging om de stukken van haar leven terug samen te zetten.
