De eerste bemande vlucht naar Mars, onder bevel van Luke Graham (Don Cheadle), landt in het jaar 2020 veilig op de rode planeet. Maar het Marslandschap herbergt een bizar en afschuwelijk geheim. Een mysterieus drama heeft rampzalige gevolgen, waarbij er onder de bemanning slachtoffers vallen. De raadselachtige laatste boodschap van Graham laat de NASA niet los. De Mars Recovery Mission wordt gelanceerd om uit te zoeken wat er is gebeurd en om eventuele overlevenden op te halen.
