Calvin Cambridge, een 14-jarige wees, vindt een paar sportschoenen met de bijna weggevaagde initialen 'M.J.' erop. Op een avond gaat hij samen met enkele vrienden de schoenen opzoeken, en wordt hij geraakt door een inslaande bliksem. Calvin groeit uit tot een superster in de NBA.
