Darrel Curtis probeert zijn twee broertjes Sodapop en Ponyboy op te voeden. Ze behoren tot de Greasers, een jeugdbende in de jaren 60. Ponyboy wil schrijver worden en is verliefd op Cherry, behorend tot een vijandige bende, 'the Socs'.
