Muurbloempje Muriel Heslop woont met haar grote familie in een beklemmend badplaatsje in Australie. Muriel leeft in een droomwereld, die steunt op de liedjes van Abba en catalogi met bruidskleding. Zij wacht smachtend op haar droomprins die haar uit haar middelmatigheid moet redden. Als hij op zich laat wachten, neemt Muriel haar lot in eigen handen en trekt naar het bruisende Sidney, Als ze daar de levenslustige Rhonda ontmoet gaat de wereld voor haar open. Maar haar doel blijft: trouwen, hoe dan ook!
