In een motelkamer in Lansing, Michigan, komen twee oude schoolvrienden bijeen. Vince (Ethan Hawke), een lusteloze vrijwillige brandweerman die hasj verkoopt om aan geld te komen, en Johnny, een jonge regisseur wiens debuutfilm op het plaatselijke filmfestival wordt vertoond, hebben elkaar tien jaar niet gezien. Hun gesprek is amicaal totdat Vince begint over een pijnlijk geheim uit hun schooltijd.
