Maggie is een alleenstaande moeder die met haar 12-jarige zoon Oliver verhuist naar Brooklyn. Gedwongen om lange werkuren te draaien, geeft ze de zorg van haar zoon in handen van hun nieuwe buurman Vincent, een misantropische, hedonistische en ruwe oorlogsveteraan die naast hen woont. Er ontstaat echter al snel een vreemde vriendschap tussen het onwaarschijnlijke paar.
