London, 1974. Charles Thoroughgood is net begonnen bij de Britse geheime dienst MI6. Hij krijgt de opdracht zijn vriendschap met Viktor Koslov weer op te pakken. Tijdens zijn studie aan Oxford waren de twee goede vrienden. Het doel is om van Viktor een dubbelspion te maken. Via Viktor ontdekt Charles de waarheid achter het complexe verleden van zijn pas overleden vader.
