De Californische tiener Anita Minteer worstelt met een afwezige moeder, haar moeders beledigende vriend, Rooney, en een gebrek aan respect van haar klasgenoten. Dit verandert allemaal wanneer een pen-pal schoolproject haar in contact brengt met de veroordeelde Howard. Anita stelt Howard's voorwaardelijke vrijlating veilig en maakt zich gewelddadig af tegen Rooney nadat hij haar heeft verkracht. Al snel is de geweergekke tiener op de vlucht met Howard, met zijn reclasseringsambtenaar in de achtervolging.
