Moleculair bioloog Ian Gray is geobsedeerd door het menselijk oog. Zijn fascinatie leidt tot een grote persoonlijke tragedie, maar zet hem ook op het spoor van een revolutionair wetenschappelijk inzicht. Ian, die zijn scepsis over het metafysische nooit onder stoelen of banken heeft gestoken, zal er gaandeweg achter komen dat wetenschap en wonder elkaar niet principieel hoeven uit te sluiten.
