De ouders van de 14-jarige Michael zijn omgekomen bij een auto-ongeluk. Daarom verhuist hij naar de stad, om bij zijn oom Ted en tante Ellen en zijn neefje Curtis te gaan wonen. Dat is een hele verandering voor hem en het is dan ook niet makkelijk voor Michael om zijn draai te vinden. Zijn oom is heel anders dan zijn vader en steunt hem niet als hij ten onrechte beschuldigd wordt van mishandeling. Dat is voor Michael de druppel: hij wil terug naar zijn oma en opa op het platteland. Curtis wil mee. En zo beginnen de jongens samen aan een spannende reis.
