Oost-Texas, 1980. Richard Dane, een gewone man, schiet uit zelfverdediging een man dood. Dan krijgt hij te maken met Ben Russel, een ruige ex-gevangene en de vader van de man die Dane heeft neergeschoten. Russel is vastbesloten om de dood van zijn zoon te wreken. Maar dorpscorruptie en paranoia veranderen deze gezworen vijanden in onwaarschijnlijke bondgenoten. De twee door schuld getroffen vaders gaan op zoek naar de waarheid, en worden hierbij geholpen door Dane's vrouw en een privédetective uit het achterland van Houston.
