Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt in een Roemeens dorp het lichaam van een vermoorde Duitse soldaat gevonden. Het dorp heeft de keus een schuldige aan te wijzen of slachtoffer te worden van represailles. De notabelen van het dorp proberen daarom de dorpsgek over te halen de moord te bekennen.
