Red Bovie (Robert Duvall), een Texaanse ranch-eigenaar, wordt gedwongen zijn land en huis op te geven. Hij is echter niet van plan om rustig met pensioen te gaan. In plaats daarvan springt hij samen met zijn vervreemde kleinzoon in zijn Cadillac voor een wild avontuur in Mexico vol geweren, vrouwen en drank.
