Het verhaal gaat over een 17-jarig meisje Mia (Chloë Moretz ) dat in een coma raakt en een zogenaamde uittreding heeft nadat zij en haar familie betrokken zijn bij een tragisch auto-ongeluk. In de vierentwintig uur die volgen op het afschuwelijke auto-ongeluk, wordt Mia voor een onmogelijke keuze gesteld.
