De verlegen kleuterleidster Dorothy (Diana Ross) uit Harlem komt terecht in een droomwereld waar ze de gele stenen weg moet volgen. Ze wordt vergezeld door een vogelverschrikker op zoek naar een brein, een tinnen man die ook een hart wil en een laffe leeuw die zo graag moedig wil zijn. De film is een afro-amerikaanse versie van The Wizard of Oz.
