Mardin (Turkije), 1915. Op een nacht drijft de Turkse gendarmerie alle Armeense mannen samen. Ook de jonge smid Nazaret Manoogian wordt van zijn familie gescheiden. Hij slaagt er evenwel in om de verschrikkingen van de volkerenmoord te overleven. Pas jaren later verneemt hij dat zijn tweelingdochters de genocide ook overleefd hebben. Hij is vastbesloten om hen terug te vinden en zijn zoektocht leidt hem van de woestijn van Mesopotamië naar Havana tot in de droge verlaten prairies van North Dakota.
