Documentaire over de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd van verschillende Afrikaanse landen in de jaren 60 en 70 aan de hand van teksten uit het boek 'The Wretched of the Earth' van theoreticus Frantz Fanon. Regisseur Olsson ontleent hiervoor archiefbeelden van een aantal van de meest felle en meest intense gevechten tussen rebellen en het leger. De film toont hoe de voormalige koloniën na soms meer dan 50 jaar vechten 'verlost' raakten van de buitenlandse controle, met alle gevolgen die er bij horen.
