Jude droomt over studeren in de grote stad. Voor hij het weet is hij echter getrouwd met een boerendochter en veroordeeld tot het dorpsleven. Als zijn vrouw plotseling vertrekt, ziet hij zijn kans schoon: hij gaat werken en studeren in Christminster. Daar ontmoet hij zijn nichtje Sue. De twee worden uitstekende vrienden. Ze besluiten niet toe te geven aan de verliefdheid die volgt. Sue stort zich in een huwelijk met een oudere leraar en Jude keert huiswaarts...
