Een Amerikaanse vrouw (Joan Allen) zit gevangen in een liefdeloos, verstikkend huwelijk met politicus Anthony (Sam Neill). Ze begint een affaire met een man uit het Midden Oosten (Simon Abkarian), een Libaneze chirurg die verbannen is naar Londen. Hun passie is de start van een persoonlijke reis waarin liefde en religieuze overtuigingen vechten om superioriteit. Hun wilde, erotische avontuur begint in Londen en brengt hen van Belfast en Beiroet tot Havana.
