Jude Keffy-Horn is een tiener die samen met zijn adoptiemoeder Harriet en zus Prudence in Vermont woont. In een wereld van drugs en alcohol overlijdt zijn beste vriend Teddy aan een overdosis waar Jude kapot van is. Hij wordt uiteindelijk naar Manhattan gestuurd om de banden met zijn vader Les weer aan te halen en de verwantschappen met zijn halfbroer Teddy te ontdekken.
