Een politieagent wordt vermoord wanneer hij in het ziekenhuis ligt en Martin Beck en zijn collega's worden op de zaak gezet. Zij ontdekken dat hij een harde en brute politieman was die vele klachten kreeg over zijn harde optreden, en gaan gericht op zoek naar mensen met een motief.
