Constance is een jonge vrouw die is opgegroeid in het conservatieve Auckland, Nieuw-Zeeland, van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ze is gek op Hollywood-films en is ervan overtuigd dat het leven meer te bieden heeft dan haar carrière als lerares op een lagere school. Ze neemt ontslag en besluit haar dromen na te jagen.
