L.A. privé-detective Arthur Shame is een voormalig politieagent die door een oude collega ingeschakeld wordt bij een drugszaak. Shame is enkele jaren geleden door vreemde omstandigheden uit de politiemacht gezet. Tijdens zijn onderzoek ziet hij veel oude relaties en ontdekt dat degenen die ervoor zorgden dat hij ontslagen werd, ook met zijn huidige zaak te maken hebben.
