De beroemde schrijver Harry Block (Woody Allen) kan geen letter meer op papier krijgen. Zijn leven is een aan eenschakeling van onvoorspelbare neurotische, chaotische en erotische avonturen. Met een hang naar drank, verslaafd aan kalmeringsmiddelen en achtervolgd door zijn psychiater, laat hij zich bij het schrijven vooral inspireren door zijn eigen leven, waarmee hij zich de woede van zijn naasten op de hals haalt. Zo dreigt zijn maitresse Lucie hem te vermoorden en zijn tweede echtgenote heeft hem de bons gegeven na een affaire met een van haar patientes.
