Kevin is een jonge dertiger die nooit echt “volwassen” is geworden. Gescheiden van zijn vrouw Jill, die de voogdij kreeg over Ben, hun zesjarige zoon, ziet hij zijn familie alleen tijdens de vakantie. Dit jaar vieren ze Kerstmis in het huis van Jills ouders, in Oakville, een vredig stadje. Maar als hij op het laatste moment bij hen thuis aankomt, realiseert Kevin zich al snel dat niemand erg blij lijkt hem te zien, behalve zijn zoon. Geërgerd door de getoonde perfectie van Todd, de nieuwe vriend van zijn ex-vrouw, besluit Kevin de plaats te verlaten
