Uruguay 1966. De invloedrijke politicus Aurelio Saavedra neemt zijn buitenechtelijk dochtertje Masángeles mee naar zijn huis na de zelfmoord van haar moeder. Zijn vrouw Aurora zal dit nooit te boven komen. Masángeles ondervindt snel dat ze zich in dit huis vol gestoorde egoïsten maar beter kan aanpassen. Buiten heerst een burgeroorlog tussen amateuristische guerillero’s en wrede militairen.
