Het enige dat Wally Mellish, een ex-gevangene in het Australië van de jaren zestig, wil, is een rustig leven leiden met zijn vriendin Beryl. Helaas, wanneer twee politieagenten langskomen om dit te verstoren, loopt een misverstand al snel uit de hand, waardoor Wally, Beryl en haar kind vast komen te zitten in hun huis, omringd door gewapende politie in de veronderstelling dat Wally iedereen gegijzeld houdt. De gebeurtenissen ontaarden al snel in een mediacircus, terwijl Wally er door de belegering – onbedoeld – in slaagt een symbool te worden voor de anti-oorlogsbeweging.
