Lucille Angelier ziet bij het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog haar man vertrekken naar het front. Eigenlijk heeft ze nooit van hem gehouden. Zij blijft achter met haar schoonmoeder en brengt haar tijd door met piano spelen. Maar wanneer ze verplicht worden een Duitse officier te huisvesten, een man genaamd Bruno von Falk, die in zijn vroegere burgerleven componist blijkt geweest te zijn, voelt ze zich al vlug tot de man aangetrokken.
