De ecoloog Charles Landon komt samen met zijn familie door een hevige storm in een klein dorp op het eiland Newfoundland terecht. Wanneer er als gevolg van diezelfde storm een bultrug op het strand terecht komt, probeert hij het beest te redden en doet hij er alles aan om te voorkomen dat de minder liefdadige plannen van de lokale bevolking tot uitvoering zullen worden gebracht.
