Wanneer de bekende avonturier Douglas Temple te weten komt dat er een wetenschappelijke expeditie opgezet wordt om naar de oorsprong van de mens te zoeken, kan hij het niet laten om zich ermee te bemoeien, en hij sluit zich aan bij de wetenschappers. Helaas gaat niet alles zoals gepland. Ze raken de weg kwijt, worden bedreigd door brutale inboorlingen en tenslotte omringd door een stel heel vreemde halp aap, half mens wezens.
