Portugal, zestiende eeuw. Koning Sebastian is geobsedeerd door zijn voorgangers en de wens om Portugal weer de grootsheid te geven die het vroeger had en zo zijn land te leiden naar een Portugees wereldrijk, het Vijfde Rijk. Sebastian besluit om ten oorlog te trekken tegen de Moslims.
