Manchester 1976. Tony Wilson, afgestudeerd aan Cambridge, bezoekt een concert van de Sex Pistols. Geïnspireerd door dit belangrijke moment in de muziekhistorie beginnen ze een platenlabel, 'Factory Records'. De eerste band die ze contracteren is Joy Division (die later verdergaat als New Order). Andere bands volgen, en allen zijn zij toonaangevende artiesten voor hun tijd. Wat volgt is een verhaal over muziek, seks, drugs, popsterren en de geboorte van een van de meest bekende clubs in de wereld, 'The Hacienda', vergelijkbaar met 'Studio 54'. Deze komedie laat zien wat er gaande was op het gebied van muziek in Manchester, vanaf eind jaren zeventig tot en met begin jaren negentig.
