Plot

In 1933 wordt het normaal zo rustige San Jose opgeschrikt door een blinde haat tegen twee van kidnapping beschuldigde stadsgenoten, Howard Tyler en Jerry Slocum. Bewoners vormen een groep en zijn van plan hen te lynchen. Tyler en Slocum hadden namelijk een jongen van rijke afkomst ontvoerd en losgeld willen incasseren. Een en ander is verkeerd gelopen, waarbij de jongen is gedood. Na arrestatie van de ontvoerders heeft de plaatselijke journalist Gil Stanton de bevolking tegen de twee opgehitst.
