De film vertelt het verhaal van screenwriter Charlie Kaufman die probeert om Susan Orleans non-fictie boek The Orchid Thief te verfilmen. Het boek is het verhaal van John Laroche, een plantendealer die zeldzame orchideeën kloont en deze aan verzamelaars verkoopt.
