Ten tijde van de Vietnamoorlog, wordt Captain Willard de jungle in gestuurd om Colonel Kurtz te vinden en te vermoorden. Kurtz heeft zijn eigen leger opgebouwd, en weigert nog naar de legerleiding te luisteren. Terwijl Willard de jungle in vaart, worden hij en de rest van de bemanning langzaam overvallen door de gevechten en gekte van de omgeving.
